About Calpurnia Jean...

My name is Calpurnia Jean Carney and I am an artist.

I like to paint, sing, dance, and make jewellery. I was born with a very rare genetic disorder called BPAN. (Beta-propeller Protein Accumulation Neuro-degeneration). Less than 1000 people globally have been diagnosed with BPAN.

BPAN affects different people in different ways. For me, the symptoms are epilepsy, autism, and intellectual disability. I had expressive language delay until I was nine. When the doctors put me on anti-seizure meds, my language exploded and everyone finally got to hear about what I had been thinking about!

School was pretty hard. Socialising can be hard too because I don't like it when it's too noisy and I sometimes get anxious easily.

I'm lucky that I enjoy being creative. It is very relaxing, and I get help with the harder parts like adding the catches and tags. I have very low muscle tone in my hands and that makes this difficult.

My Mum Emily and I have been talking about this business for a long time. Finally, all the pieces have fallen into place and here it is! I hope you enjoy wearing my creations as much as I do making them.

I am also a painter and sculptor and use my images and designs on tote bags, purses and stationery. Next year I am having a solo exhibition of my artwork.
